From April through July the Western Bluebirds nest in cavities in the trees and in the wooden nest boxes specifically designed for birds of their size. As part of the monitored nest box project of the California Bluebird Recovery Program I check the nest boxes on a weekly basis and record notes about the activity in the box including the number of eggs, age of chicks and number of fledglings, if any. It is exciting to observe the nests throughout the season in such an intimate way. Here are a couple of my design interpretations of bluebirds.
